Demographics of Sarawak

Population

Sarawak has a population of  over  2.7 million. The highest populations can be found in the state’s capital Kuching (782,500), followed by Miri (416,300), Sibu  (336,600) and Bintulu (255,400). The annual population growth rate is 1.8 per cent.

 

Cultural Diversity

Sarawak is truly a multicultural state with more than 20 ethnic groups. This multiculturalism is reflected in the people’s lifestyles, cultural practices, food and experiences.

Intermarriage is common and is said to have contributed to greater unity and understanding among the different ethnic groups.

Indigenous Sarawakians play a defining role in the state’s cultural landscape with their dances, music, crafts and traditional practices.

The people practise a variety of religions including Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, ancestor worship, Baha'ism and animism.

Sarawakians enjoy a variety of colorful festivals throughout the calendar year. This cultural diversity has helped Sarawak to become one of the region’s most popular tourist destinations.
